Back to the Future of Dressmaking

Once upon a time all things weren’t mass made in Chinese sweatshops. Those were the days when products were handmade with old world attention to detail. The days when no corners were cut in the creation of couture. And dressmakers had to earn the right to practice their craft after long apprenticeships.

Fast forward to the age of the department store with special areas cordoned off for high fashion designer names, the Chanels and Guccis of the world. Their images enchant us but scratch below the surface and you’ll see that their couture is actually made in China! And you have to buy it off the rack in sizes 2, 4, 6, 8 etc. No consideration for a woman’s unique silhouette.  No chance of finding that “one and only” piece.

Now, if you don’t want to traipse from store to store painfully searching for what you want, you can go online and let your fingers do the walking. Certainly, more convenient, if you don’t mind spending good money without discussing or trying on the product. But you have the same paradox: a high fashion designer name, projecting luxury and exclusivity…made in China. Pinch yourself. Doesn’t this all feel a bit fake? Don’t you think that this “shopping experience” may be going out of fashion a tad? Especially for women like you.

We think that more and more women will feel that they deserve better. We think that the design and creation of bespoke couture, practiced in the tradition of the original haute couture masters, is making a comeback. It’s, as they say, back to the future.

So, here’s to the true couturier, we say. The one who listens to get a real insight into what her clients want. The one who delights her client with ideas so she can make a unique order – an order that excites her. Yes, here’s to the dressmaker that will then transform the bespoke order into a masterpiece made to be a beautiful expression of the woman who will wear it.
